Matt: [00:00:28] And I'm Matt Dhase. We believe that your story could contain the key that unlocks someone else's healing. So we connect with humans from all walks of life as they share their journeys from chaos to courage.
Gareth: [00:00:44] So if you're ready to experience the ease and flows that come from living an expansive and well crafted life, you're in the right place. This is the Call to Courage podcast.
Matt: [00:01:03] Hey, y'all, it's Matt. And in today's episode, we are doing something we call a micro dose. This is where we give you a specific thing to do, whether it's an app to install on your smartphone, a writing exercise or a habit or routine to to integrate into your day. Micro doses do exactly that. They show you how to do it. And we try to keep this as quick and succinct as possible so that you can get the information that you need to do the exercise and get on with your life. And every micro dose episode is going to have a PDF that's available to download in our Call to Courage Conversation, which is a private telegram group where we dive into deeper discussion of the topics that we discuss on the podcast, as well as drop bonuses like the PDF that we're going to go over today. So to get access, you go to Call to Courage Live and there's an easy process for you to register and get access. Today's Micro Dose is a self assessment writing exercise, and it's designed to help you identify and get clear on exactly what type of work you want to be doing and how it feels to do that work and how it feels to get paid for doing work that you love. And it's really for anyone who isn't 100% happier, satisfied with your work life balance, or maybe you feel like you're not making the amount of money that you want for the job that you already have.
Matt: [00:02:28] This exercise is going to really put a microscope to that part of your life and and supercharge it so that you can then step into your courage, step into change that's going to bring about this work life balance that you seek. The exercise I'm about to go over can really be done in about 20 minutes. And all you need to get started is a piece of paper and a pen, or you can use your smartphone app if you're more of a digital guy. I'm a pen and paper guy and I'm going to be sharing my notes and my full text exercise in the Call to Courage conversation. So be sure to check that out if that's in your flow. So this exercise is particularly important to me right now in my life because, well, if you listen to episode three of this podcast, you would have heard me name my call to courage, which is to step up and show up by financially providing for my family. That's something that I haven't yet done in this current relationship. And I am married with a six month old son, and we have been living off of my wife's savings and the maternity payments. And even though I've been able to show up physically and emotionally and be there for the family, I haven't shown up financially and I'm using this exercise as an opportunity to really anchor in the type of work that I want to be doing, the way that I want to impact the world and getting in touch with that feeling of earning income for doing those things that I love.
Matt: [00:04:00] So one of the priorities for me is to not get caught in the path that I was in before of doing work just because it paid me money, even if I hated the work. I've been stuck in jobs that I've hated and I was addicted to the income. And so I stuck with them. And in truth. I lost time and time is that one resource that we can't get back. So I don't want to get caught in that same loop. That's why I'm doing this exercise. And what I'm going to do first is I'm going to run through the steps for you guys quickly so that you can see how this is going to work. It's going to be a five step writing exercise, and then you can go create the space and do it on your own time and again. It's an exercise that you can do in 20 minutes or less if you're really on it. And yeah, let's dive right in. Step one, you're going to clear some space. You're going to turn off your phone, you're going to eliminate distractions. Hopefully you can find a place that's quiet where you're not going to be interrupted and you're going to set aside the next 20 minutes just to do this exercise and nothing more. To get started, I want you to get in a comfortable spot, close your eyes and imagine a day that's so far into the future for you that you are free of any constraints, any perceptions, any limiting beliefs that you feel are currently holding you back.
Matt: [00:05:19] It's almost as if you've been given a magic wand that you can wave and boom. You are now living your perfect day. So you wake up in the morning, you are living in your dream house. You are laying next to your perfect partner. You're having coffee on a terrace, whatever that day looks like for you. Imagine it and get to the part of your day where you are going to work, you are creating, you are doing the thing that you do that makes you income. That is what we're going to focus on here. And really give yourself permission to dream big here. Get get in touch with that dream job. Get in touch with that perfect work life balance where you go to work, you feel amazing. You do your thing, you get paid the amount of money that you want and and you give back to the world in a way that's meaningful for you. Find that piece of your imagination and drop into it. All right. Next, you're going to open your eyes. You're going to grab your piece of paper. And I want you to make a list of the tangible elements that are present in that perfect work life balance. Things like, do you work for yourself or do you work for a company that you love and believe in? Do you work on your own or with a team of people? Do you work from home? Do you go into an office? What is your office look like? What is your workspace look like? What are the objects that you have in your workspace? What type of work are you doing? Are you working with your hands? Are you are you strategizing with your mind? Are you singing opera? Are you working on a boat? Get in touch with the tangible elements of what that work looks like for you.
Matt: [00:07:03] And maybe you don't know what that is yet. Maybe you don't know what the actual thing you want to be doing is, but you can instead focus on how it feels. So on your piece of paper, I want you to make a second list, and I want you to imagine what it feels like when you are working. Hopefully in your perfect work life you are not stressed out. So how are you feeling? For me, I want to feel valued for my ideas. I want to feel listened to by my coworkers. I want to feel validated by the people who are working alongside of me. I want to feel excitement as I see my ideas getting birthed and implemented into a greater strategy. I want to be inspired by the work that I do. How do you want to feel? Write those down. And real quick, everything that you write down here in these lists should be written down in the positive present tense. This means instead of instead of saying something like, I'm not stressed out at work, you would say.
Matt: [00:08:01] I'm feeling focused and relaxed at work. Or instead of saying, I will be my own boss, you would write it in the present tense of I am my own boss. So the positive, present tense. Next, I want you to focus on your work and how what you do makes the world a better place. How does it integrate with the community around you? How is it impacting your clients or the world or the community that you're in? The idea here is to write down a list of the ways that what you do improves and integrates with the world around you. For me, I don't know specifically what I'm going to be doing, but I do know that I want to help creators find their authentic voice and broadcast it to the world. And in doing so, that's going to contribute to more creators reaching more people with their great and brilliant ideas. I want to be a part of that. So find that piece of your work for you and write those down. Next, let's focus on the income that you receive. Do you have an amount of money in mind that you want to be paid? If so, write that down. Do you get paid hourly, monthly, or in chunks? How do you get paid? Does it show up automatically in your bank account? Do you receive a physical paycheck? Do you get paid in cryptocurrency? And how does that moment feel for you when you do get paid? It's been a while since I've made any real money, and at the same time I still remember what it feels like to refresh my bank balance and see a whole ton of money that wasn't there before being there now.
Matt: [00:09:50] And that feeling of lightness and inspiration and excitement that I can go out and buy the plane ticket that I was waiting for that paycheck to come in. To pull the trigger on or get the thing that I couldn't afford until I got my bonus check. Identify for you how you get paid and the emotional connection you have to that money arriving to you. Write that down. The final part I want you to write down is finding the elements of how this job or how this new work life balance changes your life. What I mean by this are things like. Are you still taking the same types of vacations? Do you have more or less spare time? And what are you doing with it? What are your friends and family? Think about your new work life balance. Are they proud of you? Do they love what you're doing? How does it feel when you describe your work to people that you're meeting for the first time? Do you feel expansive? Do you feel proud? Get in touch with those feelings and write them down. And when you've completed that one, you've done this five part exercise, the tangible elements of your work, the way it feels, how what you do makes the world a better place, how it feels to get paid for doing the things that you love, and how having this new work life balance changes your life.
Matt: [00:11:22] When you've completed this exercise, I want you to take this piece of paper and I want you to put it somewhere where you can refer back to it from time to time. You can make a reminder on your phone to review it once a month and add to it whenever you feel inspired. You see, this completed exercise represents a very distinct, very aligned possibility in this matrix of infinite possibilities in your future. And by writing it down, you're becoming more familiar with how living a work life balance that you love. You're figuring out how that feels. And ultimately this exercise is going to support your life path because now you know exactly what you want and the decisions that you make from this point forward are going to bring this scenario closer and closer to your current reality. So bravo again.
